Android Take Screenshot Android Studio With Phone Mockup
An important part of showcasing your mobile app is creating neat mock ups with your screenshots. There a couple of paid services which can do this for you. I personally used placeit when I had to send a few images of my app to a potential client at short notice. Having absolute zero experience using image editing software (apart from paint) I had no choice but to pay placeit $8 per image.
However knowing that I would have to create more images in the long run I felt that $8 per image was a little too much. After spending a few hours on google I realized that it's not that difficult to do it for free. If, like me, you have no experience in using graphics editing programs like Photoshop, then you probably won't be able to create mock ups which can compete with the all the bells and whistles offered by services like placeit. However, if you just want something which looks half decent then read on.
Install GIMP
The only tool required for this is a free graphics editing program called GIMP. Go ahead and download and install GIMP.
Download a template image
First you need to download an empty template image. Doing a quick Google image search for "android template perspective" I found the following image from android central:
Get your screenshot
Being a Xamarin developer I grabbed my screenshots using the Android Emulator for Visual Studio. Getting your screenshots will vary depending on your set up. The following screenshot is from the "Sport" sample app available here.
Open the images with GIMP
Right-click the template image and select "Edit with GIMP" do the same for your screen shot
Copy the screen shot onto the template
- From the GIMP window which contains the screenshot do the following
Select -> All
Edit -> Copy - Now go to the GIMP window which contains the template and the following
- Layer -> New Layer -> OK
- Select the new layer
- Edit -> Paste
Transform the image so that it fits over the screenshot
- Switch the visibility of the layer which contains the screenshot off by clicking the visibility icon in the "Layers" window. This will make it easier for you to see where you are transforming the image to.
- Choose Tools -> Transform Tools -> Perspective
- Move the corners of the screenshot until it fits over the template
- Hit "Transform" in the "Perspective" window
- Make the screenshot layer visible by clicking the visibility icon again in "Layers" window
You'll want to be a little neater than I've done it above.
Save the image
Finally save the image by going to File -> Export As
So as you can see its quick and easy to create a basic mock up image for your app using free tools.
